Welcome, everyone! Here’s the program for the 8th Global Investigative Journalism Conference, (#GIJC13), scheduled for October 12-15, 2013, in beautiful Rio de Janeiro. It’s the first time we’re holding the GIJC in the global south, and we’re combining it with two other key events in journalism: the annual Latin America Investigative Journalism Conference (COLPIN), and the International Congress of ABRAJI, Brazil’s investigative journalism association. Panels and workshops will be available in languages as marked: English (Eng), Portuguese (Port), Spanish (Span). Plenary and showcase panels will be translated into all three. There will be streaming video available for all plenary and showcase panels and all those held in the RDC auditorium (C1). We look forward to seeing you in Rio!

Saska Cvetkovska has worked as a journalist for hard – hitting TV news shows and magazines about corruption, abuse of power and human rights. She also has an extensive knowledge about EU integration processes and has a clear ability to undertake in-depth research and analysis on the chosen subjects. She has good knowledge of the socio-economic and political structure of the Republic of Macedonia (government, public institutions, media and civil society organisations) and the Western Balkan countries. She was part of the investigative special department in the A1 television (the station was closed by the Government in 2011 because of its critical reporting) and a reporter in the TV magazine Eurozoom and the evening news. Ms Cvetkovska is an author of several investigative documentaries about human rights and workers rights produced in 2011/2012. As a part of the TV magazine Eurozoom she is an author of more than 20 reportages and documentaries filmed in the EU countries and the region. She is a a dedicated activist for media freedom and protection of human rights.

Special interest: Data Jounralism. At the moment, together with two other reporeters Saska is working on creating a data base on media ownership in the country.

Challenges:Investigative journalists in my country do not have the privilege to be honored for their work. We are victims of often attacks by business and political elites, mainly the government, labeled as traitors, spies, non-patriots, our pictures are often hanging in the studios on the mainstream televisions or in newspapers with calls for our liquidation and etc. The media freedom situation in the country is often compared with the situation in Belarus. From this point of vies our biggest challenges as a journalist is to stay strong and find out ways to continue working.
