Welcome, everyone! Here’s the program for the 8th Global Investigative Journalism Conference, (#GIJC13), scheduled for October 12-15, 2013, in beautiful Rio de Janeiro. It’s the first time we’re holding the GIJC in the global south, and we’re combining it with two other key events in journalism: the annual Latin America Investigative Journalism Conference (COLPIN), and the International Congress of ABRAJI, Brazil’s investigative journalism association. Panels and workshops will be available in languages as marked: English (Eng), Portuguese (Port), Spanish (Span). Plenary and showcase panels will be translated into all three. There will be streaming video available for all plenary and showcase panels and all those held in the RDC auditorium (C1). We look forward to seeing you in Rio!

Caroline is an experienced trainer and security and risk management consultant, who has trained UK and foreign journalists both in the UK and overseas.

She brings over 24 years of experience to INSI and has worked in South Asia, South America, Africa and the Middle East, providing training and security advice for a broad range of media organisations. She is the former Head of High Risk Security at the BBC.

She began her career in the military and 15 years ago, she moved into the security-training and operations sector, where she started by training BBC journalists to work in hostile environments. Since then, she has pioneered hostile environment training for the media and is a specialist in personal security, risk and travel management security; including kidnap and ransom and crisis management as well as anti surveillance training packages.

She is experienced at working undercover and has vast experience of working in high risk environments where the need to hide equipment and information was paramount. She is adept at training journalists in these skills.
